I first conceived of this project a few years ago after reading about the concept on a Halloween mail list. I think the idea finally came together after seeing The Nightmare Before Christmas for the 100th time and thinking it would be fun to build a gothic looking Tim Burton-inspired machine for Halloween.
I did several sketches trying to capture the spirit of the Nightmare "geometry" and eventually arrived at a shape I thought I could build. The first step was to layout the main forms. As usual, I based the overall size of the project on the size of the raw material, and how it can be broken down after use. Then I determined how I could cut the shapes I wanted from standard 4x8 foot sheets of particleboard. |
