One detail I knew I wanted to incorporate was the pointy/droopy looking "overhang" often found in gothic imagery. I sketched out a paper template across the top of the main forms, and then cut the overhang out in sections. This was backed with some 2x4 lengths so it stood out from the "face" of the machine, creating some depth.

Previously I had purchased some orange rope lighting on a whim and decided to use the lights to backlight the overhang and make it glow. The final effect was somewhat subtle but worked well after dark. One great feature of the lighting was it came with screw-down plastic clips -- the clips allowed us to make the rope lights detachable from the machine, which was great for storage and reuse.

My two assistants were on hand to offer help where needed ("There goes Dad again with his crazy Halloween stuff...").
