In all the construction projects I do, I try base the size of the final piece on the dimensions of the raw materials. This helps minimize waste and also helps me decide how large something can be with a minimum of assembly. In this case, the PVC came in 10 foot lengths, and I figured after being bent, each triangular panel would be about 9 feet long, making the overall dimensions of the saucer 18 feet wide by 9 feet tall.

If I had a dollar for every trip I made to Home Depot during the course of this project, I could probably buy a real flying saucer. I don't know how many times I went there, but the visits were many. Often I would go to exchange some material I had bought the previous week, or pick up something in the hope of solving an unforseen problem.

Shown here are several completed panels which are ready to be bent and assembled.
